18th February, 2014 - Raglan

Another hot day took off to the Bridal Veil Falls and the three Raglan west coast bays.

First of all after breaky went to the Waireinga Bridal Veil Falls. We were surpised to see so much water flowing in this dry weather. Imagine what it would be like in the wet season.

Starting off at the top of the falls looking down 55 metres to the bottom.

Half way down the steps to the bottom

Half way down.

At the bottom looking up to the top where we started a lot of stairs to get back up again, hard work. My work out for the day.

Met up with some Italian boys. So many young tourists around. Good to see.
Exhausted by the time we reached the top again went back to our unit for a coffee and a bit to eat. Then took off to the west coast surfing bays.

Started off at the furthest bay called Whale Bay one of the surfing spots but as you will see no beach just rocks.

Below and above Whale bay looking both ways. This bay is not recommended for beginners. Probably because of all the rocks.

Next Bay is called Manu  8Km west from Raglan town is the world- famous surf break, the long, peeling left hand break said to offer one of the longest rides in the world, featured in the 1966 surfing film Endless Summer. But as you can see it is flat calm no wind no surf. Unfortunately we didn't see the big waves and all the action.

Looking from the top of the hill looking down over Manu Bay.

Arriving at the last bay Te Kopua Beach the big sandy beach where everyone comes to swim and surf.

Looking over Te Kopua We had a swim, cold to get in but very refreshing in this heat.

Looking along the beach the other way. Can't drive your car down to the beach so had to walk down a steep hill. Unfortunately had to climb back up after the swim so got hot all over again. I said that we had our workout at the falls this morning but this was a second one for the day.

Drove back further towards Raglan to the end of the strip of  the long sandy beach which finished at the harbour entrance.

Looking back at the harbour entrance. The entrance to a large estuary  and boat harbour which goes a long way inland. There are a lot of waterways in this area. I never realised how big the area is that covers Raglan. A lot of new housing subdivisions. I always thought of it as a sleepy town on the west coast but I was wrong there.

Back to just in front of our motel. Bridge on right where we walk over the estuary to a sandy swimming area where I swam yesterday. Our Motel up in the trees above the far end of the bridge. I walked over today to try and get some photos of the kids that come down after school and jump off the bridge.

The start of the jump

Managed to get a group of kids jumping at once but unfortunately my lense caught the sun and hasn't come out to clear over exposed. It was great to watch them.

Along the front of the Motel on the water side. You can see that there are patios at the bottom on ground level of each unit then the bedrooms are over above with nice bi-fold windows that open right up.

To summerise Raglan we have enjoyed our stay here and really glad that we had two nights here as we had thought that we may have only needed one night. Lots of areas to see and spread out over a large space.

The weather has been great very hot as there is no wind  & flat seas. The wind is coming from the east and blowing right over us. The only downside is that we have missed seeing the big surf which it is so famous for.

Raglan also has a nice wide street through the middle of town which makes it give a feeling of space.

We hope to be on the road by 8.00am  tomorrow to drive over the Forgotten World highway going through to Stratford and ending up in New Plymouth. It will be a long driving day but really looking forward to it.
Lets hope this weather will last as it wouldn't really be worth while if it was misty or wet but we think that it looks OK at this stage.
